Nessuno tra gli eventi in Toscana è più emblematico del Palio di Siena. Ogni 2 Luglio e 16 Agosto la città rivive atmosfere medievali, le 17 contrade fervono per antichi dissapori o ancestrali alleanze. Camminando per Siena i giorni del Palio si respira un clima festoso, ma al tempo stesso teso, carico di aspettative e adrenalina. Non siete mai venuti a vedere il Palio di Siena?! Vi racconto cosa vi siete persi fino ad ora a non essere mai stati spettatori del Palio di Siena. Il Palio di Siena trasforma la città. Passeggiando per una qualunque delle strade di Siena vedrete il cielo inondato dalle inconfondibili bandiere dai colori sgargianti della contrada che sventolano dalle finestre, fuori dai negozi e sopra i vicoli. I contradaioli durante i giorni del Palio indossano per Siena sulle spalle la loro bandiera, perch il Palio di Siena è anch un festival dei colori, dei suoni e dei rumori, che trionfa durante la sfilata storica per il centro di Siena prima del Palio. Rulli di tamburi, squilli di trombe e nitriti di cavalli accompagnano dame, cavalieri e provetti sbandieratori in abiti medievali in rappresentanza della propria contrada. Poi la tensione sale, perché il Palio di Siena è vivo! La calca della folla in Piazza del Campo si fa insostenibile. Svenimenti, urla, speranze, imprecazioni. L’ estenuante attesa della mossa e via... il Palio di Siena si concretizza. 3 giri di pista, pochi minuti ed un unico cavallo vincente, accompagnato dalla gioia travolgente dei contradaioli in festa. Questo è il Palio di Siena, ma non cercate di clonarlo, imitarlo, esportarlo. Il Palio di Siena è dei Senesi e a Siena deve restare. Per questo non potete far altro che venirci a trovare, se volete viverlo!
E come non visitare i musei in Toscana ! Dagli albori della civiltà etrusca fino ai crepuscoli delle ultime correnti artistiche contemporanee, passando per un vasto e ben documentato medioevo romanico e gotico, attraverso il glorioso Rinascimento mediceo, i musei in Toscana offrono la documentata storia artistica di qualunque periodo vi interessi. Non si può parlare di musei in Toscana, senza aver visitato la Galleria degli Uffizi a Firenze. Il museo custodisce impareggiabili capolavori di geni dell’ arte trecentesca e rinascimentale, come Botticelli (“Primavera”, ”Nascita di Venere”), Leonardo (“Annunciazione”; “Adorazione dei Magi”), Michelangelo (“Sacra Famiglia”) e Raffaello, ma anche pittori tedeschi, olandesi e fiamminghi (Rubens, Rembrandt, Dürer). Abbondanti anche le testimonianze medievali, come in tutti i musei in Toscana, e le opere classiche, tutte raccolte a Firenze grazie al mecenatismo mediceo. Una delle raccolte più ampie di sculture tra i musei in Toscana è il Museo Nazionale del Bargello, dove, però, non troverete il ‘perfetto’ David di Michelangelo, conservato alla Galleria dell’Accademia insieme ad altre celebri opere michelangiolesche ( i ‘Prigioni’ e il ‘San Matteo’). Se vi trovate a Firenze dovrete necessariamente visitare anche alcuni dei musei ospitati a Palazzo Pitti. Per il Blues Pistoia si riempie di amanti del genere, criticati dai cittadini conservatori, ma sempre attesi; perché senza le bottiglie di birra vuote per le strade e lo sporco Pistoia Blues non sarebbe Pistoia Blues. Oltre ai grandi concerti con artisti di calibro, Pistoia è arricchita dal mercatino che invade tutte le vie del centro. Ogni sorta di curiosità e pezzo d’ artigianato viene venduto in mezzo a un inconfondibile odore di incenso... anche questo è Pistoia Blues!

These tuscany events are many and varied, ranging from village festivals, historical representations, musical and cultural happenings. The local fares held in the old squares of the towns in Tuscany are the best place to taste the local specialities of the Tuscan and local cuisine to be enjoyed in characteristic and welcoming surroundings… Tuscany is full of these places!! Almost everywhere you will find adverts indicating where local gastronomic festivals such as the chestnut festival, mushroom festival, tortello festival , acquacotta festival, wild boar festival and many others. Most of these festivals are held either inside the towns or in the countryside, always characterised by an informal , friendly and relaxed environment. While sitting at the table waiting for your meal, you will likely make friends and have a hearty laugh. You will be pleasantly impressed by the relaxed and cheerful spirit found at the Tuscan local festivals. Let yourselves be tempted by them !!!
The most significant Tuscany events is
the Palio of Siena. Every year, on the second of July and on the sixteenth of
August, the city relives it’s mediaeval atmosphere, with it’s 17
contrade (town quarters) enacting old enmities and rivalries. While walking
through Siena during the festival, you can sense a party spirit, but at the
same time a tense, adrenaline charged atmosphere that pervades the city. Have
you ever personally seen the Palio? Let me tell you in few lines what you have
been missing so far: The palio transforms the town. Walking through any of the
narrow streets, you will see the sky covered by a lively array of colours of
the contrade which hang from every windows and shops. During the days of the
Palio, those belonging to a particular contrada wear their flag on their shoulders
because the palio is also a festival of colours , sounds, noise which is enjoyed
at it’s best. Drums beat, trumpets sounds and horse accompany the knights,
the ladies with talented flag throwers in medieval costumes representing each
one it’s own contrada. Then the tension rises, and the crowd in the Piazza
del Campo waiting for the horses and their riders goes mad!! People faint, other
shout, some swear all in the expectation of the “mossa”, the moment
the race will start. It’s off!! 3 rounds of the track, only few minutes
and only one winner to be, chased by the jubilant crowd.
This is the Palio of Siena, impossible to export, copy or imitate. The palio
belongs to people of Siena and here it will stay. That is why you must come
to see it , if you want to experience it !
And what about the Tuscany museums ? You can find all you want to know from the Etruscan period down to the latest modern artistic schools, across a vast and well documented Gothic and Romanesque middle age, through the glorious Medici Renaissance. Your first visit should be to the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. The tuscany museums hosts an array of masterpieces like Botticelli ( the “Primavera “ of Botticelli, “ The birth of Venus”) , Leonardo da Vinci ( “The announcement to Mary and “Worship of the magi” ), Michelangelo ( Sacred Family), and Raffaello , but also works of German, Dutch and Flemish painters ( Rubens, Rembrandt, Durer).
You can find a vast array of mediaeval relics and of classical
works of art in other museums
in Florence. One such museum is the Museo Nazionale del Bargello,
that hosts a collection of famous statues but where you will not find the “perfect”
David of Michelangelo which is preserved in the Galleria dell’Accademia
Museum along with other works of the sculptor and painter ( The prisons”
and “ Saint Matthew”) While in Florence you could also pay a visit
to the palazzo Pitti museum. The museums in Tuscany are infinite in number and
allow the visitor to discover local cultures, forgotten events, places of natural
interest, folklore, and little known traditions. Please , add some of these
in your itinerary of the museums in Tuscany and you will return home really
enriched by their contents.
If you love music, the event you do not want to miss is the Pistoia Blues Festival:
It hosts a number of international musicians and it is held in the central cathedral
square. The festival is held during the month of July each year and fills the
city of music and people from all over Europe. True, some conservative parts
of the population resent the noise and the effect of the festival like empty
beer bottle all over the place etc., but without this it wouldn’t be a
blues festival afterall !
Together with the concerts, Pistoia hosts the local market that runs along all it’s narrow town streets where you can buy all sorts of things while tasting that smell of incense ….. This also is another aspect of Pistoia Blues !!!
What an array of Tuscany events and festivals !!!! And we have no time to mention all the vents held in Florence. They are so many that your stay in Florence will never be boring , no matter how long you’ll stay!!! Street artists, Theatre shows , art , will fill all your time.
